About the Book

This text was written with a commitment to educate teachers, students and parents associated with the education of exceptional children. Its intention is to realize the mission of “education for all” in the regular schools, thus achieving the goal of universlization of elementary education. For the convenience of the readers the text has been divided into two parts. Part I presents the foundations of Special Education, so that the reader can gain insight into the concept of exceptionality, comprehend the process of Special Education, be aware of the various approaches to Special Education and assessment procedures adopted in Special Education. Part II presents the characteristics and education of the different categories of exceptional children, such as gifted, mentally retarded, learning disabled, visually impaired, hearing impaired, communication disorders, behavior disorders, autistic, ADHD, and physically impaired.

This book is designed to be used by students who are taking their course in Special Education. It is also written for practicing teachers who want to broaden their knowledge and skills in diagnosing and remedial techniques, and intervention strategies of exceptional children. This book also provides the necessary information for in-service teachers to incorporate the intervention strategies in regular classroom to provide inclusive education.

About the Author

Dr. Umadevi M.R. an eminent teacher, researcher and administrator in higher education is currently serving as Professor of Education, Dept. of P.G. Studies in Education, Davangere University, Karnataka. She has specialized in Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Educational Research and has guided Ph D., M Phil. and M.Ed. students. She was also Dean, Faculty of Education, Kuvempu Univesity. As the coordinator of MA in Education, Directorate of Distance Education, Kuvempu University she has been instrumental in bringing out the study material in SIM mode. She has attended and presented papers in various state, national and international conferences and also participated as resource person in workshops, symposia, induction programmes, conferences and gained recognition in the field of disability studies. She has been chairman/member of various boards, committees and associations such as IAAP, AIAER and has been a visiting team member of NCTE.
