PREFACE

I am pleased to present this book ‘Gender School & Society addressing the crucial issues of gender and its relation with society and school. Gender equality has long been a major issue all over the world. Since 1970 various directives have laid the foundation of equal treatment and equal opportunities in all spheres of life to all citizens of this world, but despite the existence of a comprehensive legislative framework gender equality is yet to be achieved. The belief that the sexes are vastly different- with different needs, values and abilities has been a hallmark throughout the history of men and women in the home and at work workplace.

This book presents a clear picture that the socialization of gender roles at home and the use of a gender-biased hidden curriculum in schools lead to an inequitable education for children. Changes in the present system can be made to create a more equitable learning environment for all children. Family, community and school have to maintain an interface for the development of a gender-equitable society. First, parents, teachers, administrators peer groups etc, need to be made aware of their gender-biased tendencies. Next, they need to be provided with strategies for altering their behaviour. Finally, efforts need to be made to combat gender bias in the overall social & educational environment.

Because of the thrust of the educationists on making an inclusive and gender-equal society for future generations, the author focused on developing a gender-equal approach among the readers through this book. The authors hope that present technologies, social media & explosion of knowledge are likely to give new shape to ‘gender’ and bring out gender-free labels, on the biological structures of human beings.
