PREFACE
The Secondary Education Commission (1952-53) has very rightly stated that “The secret of good education consists in enabling the student to realize what are his talents and aptitude and in what manner and to what extent he can best develop them so as to achieve proper social adjustment and seek right types of employment…Guidance involves the difficult art of helping boys and girls to plan their own future wisely in the full light of all the factors that can be mastered about themselves and about the world in which they are to live and work.” Guidance is not the work of a few specialists. It is a service in which the entire school staff needs to work together guided by a person with specialized knowledge and skills. Guidance and Counseling is of great importance in schools. Hence a basic understanding of its fundamentals is significant for the teachers.
In the present book, the topics provided in the GGSIPU Course Curriculum B.Ed. 214 “Guidance and Counseling” implemented from the Session 2021-22 are included. All the topics in the 4 Units of the Syllabus are covered extensively. The new topics in the Course have been included in this book. These topics are-
1. “The Role of Guidance and Counseling in Distance Education.” (Chapter)
2. “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016.” (Chapter 14)
The other revisions in the syllabus have also been incorporated into the various related parts. At the end of each Chapter, a brief summary as well as long and short answer-type questions are provided.
Chapters 1 to 4 include the topics from Unit 1 of the Course Curriculum and also one topic from Unit 3. Chapter 1 “Understanding Guidance” explains the concept of Guidance. It also covers the Aims and Objectives of Guidance, at the different levels, Functions of Guidance, Principles of Guidance and Professional Ethics of Guidance. The role of Guidance in Human Development and Adjustment is also discussed. Chapter 2 is concerned with the Need and Procedure of Educational, Vocational, Psychological and Social Guidance. Chapter 3 gives the details of Group Guidance. It deals with the Concept, Need, Significance, Principles and Techniques of Group Guidance. Advantages and
