Preface

This book is written in the basis of the syllabus prepared by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) under the guidance of MHRD, New Delhi in order to orient the untrained across the country of all states and Union territories. The present book focuses on the “Elementary Education in India-A Socio-Cultural Perspective”. The untrained teachers of the country have been a golden opportunity to get training on distance mode without disturbance to their normal duties in their schools. The present book contains 10 units with Code No. 501.

The untrained will attend 15 Personal Contact Programmes in the holidays, especially on Second Saturdays and Sundays. There will be 12 Days of Workshop Activities, School-Based Activities to be completed in their working schools and some assignments and Practice Teaching to make them perfect teachers.

They will be able to review and evaluate the major recommendations of different commissions and committees during the British Raj the major developments in Indian education. Teachers will understand a brief historical perspective of the Indian Education system from ancient times to the pre-independence period. They will comprehend the strategies for the Universalisation of Elementary Education in the contemporary context and various interventions like SSA, RMSA and planning & Management issues, This book also covered the techniques to be obtained by the teachers for educating the disadvantaged children of the society.
