Preface

The Teaching of social sciences is of great significance in the construction of healthy society and in preparing students as vigilant citizens. To meet the various needs and changes in the international and national society, tremendous changes have been made in the social sciences curriculum and text books at school level and in pedagogy of social sciences particularly after the recommendations of Kothari Education Commission-1964-66, NEP-1986, the National Curriculum Framework-2005, and NEP-2020 in India.

The book ‘Content-cum-Pedagogy of Social Sciences’ has been designed according to the revised syllabus of pedagogy of social sciences. This book not only focuses on various innovative methods, approaches and techniques of teaching social sciences but also new trends and concepts of education. It discusses concept of social science education and aims and objectives of teaching social sciences in the light of NEP-2020. The book highlights importance of social

sciences in daily life. In addition, the pedagogical ideas of the great

western and Indian thinkers are discussed in the book.

Practical approach is followed in dealing with the topics such as Learning objectives, Pedagogies, Approaches and Methods of Teaching Social Sciences. Along with discussing Lee Shulman’s seven categories of teacher’s knowledge base, it also explains how to analyse the content of social science textbooks as per Pedagogical Content Knowledge Perspective. Moreover it focuses on how to develop learning outcome based lesson plans. The present book has been written to equip the prospective teachers with the competencies of social science teaching.
