Preface

Education is a process, which draws out the best in man with the aim of producing a well-balanced personality and brings about desirable changes in the learner in the way one thinks, feels and acts, in accordance with one’s concept of effective life. The most important aim of education since the beginning of human culture is that of character formation. For this, proper guidance and help is needed from trained persons time to time. It helps the institutions and the students to make right decisions, overcome limitations and inhibitions and help people to perform to the best of their ability.

This book, Guidance and Counseling, is designed to meet the requirements of the students of B.Ed and teachers, who are in the field of education and psychology especially with specialization in guidance and counseling at the graduate level. This book deals with all the important facts and principles related to guidance and counseling and related aspects in a simple, concrete and direct way. Here emphasized the scientific basis for guidance and counseling services as well as the relevance of the discipline in the field of education and comprehensive development of the individual.

In this book, the first chapter deals with Guidance and Counseling’s concepts, need principles, approaches, characteristics of good counselor and the role of a teacher in guidance and counseling. The second chapter deals with types of guidance like, educational, vocational and personal guidance and factors influencing choice of course. The third chapter deals with principle of organization, guidance services, personnel in guidance service, organization of school guidance programme, evaluation of guidance programme, tools and techniques of guidance programme, standardized and non-standardized tools and their role in guidance and counseling programme. Finally we attempted to introduce the burning cases handled in the society.
