Teachers Handbook In Elementary Mathematics

PREFACE

Since independence, there have been many efforts to improve our educational system. To improve school education, especially at elementary level, it was considered necessary to bring about qualitative changes in teacher education. National Policy of Education 1986 has suggested establishing District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) all over the country. In 1988, DIETS were established in several parts of the country. Now there are more than 450 such institutions. There are seven branches in each DIET, Pre-Service Teacher Education (PSTE) is one of them. PSTE provides two years Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) Programme where different subjects like Teaching of Hindi, English (Language), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies are taught.

In the 1st year of their course, the student-teachers practice teaching for Primary (I-V) classes, and in 2nd year for upper primary (VI-VIII) classes. The authors of this book are closely associated with this programme. They have written two books:

1. “Teaching of Mathematics at Elementary level Part I” for ETE Ist year, which guides ETE students to teach Mathematics at the primary level (Classes I-V).

2. “Teaching of Mathematics at Elementary Level Part II” for ETE 2nd year for guiding students to teach  Mathematics at middle level (Classes VI-VIII).

These books are being used in Delhi DIETs as well as in other DIETs throughout the country. ETE 1st year and second year have some common topics like Teaching Methods, Teaching Aids, and Lesson Planning, which are used in both years. Certain Mathematics contents like Commercial Mathematics. Geometry is included at both years.

Now they have brought out a “Teachers Handbook in Elementary Mathematics” which is common for both IST and IInd year students. This teacher’s guide is for both Pre-service and Inservice Elementary Mathematics Teachers.
