Preface

In modern times, the future of every country depends on scientific and technological development. In fact, the distinction between developed and developing countries is based on their achievements in the field of science. The need for and importance of pedagogy of science, therefore, have been widely acknowledged in most of the developing countries including India. Most of the universities have included this discipline in their curriculum of teacher education. This is so because there is a need to ingrain scientific attitudes in children right from the earliest times when they come into contact with the educational system.

Keeping in view the needs, requirements and skills of a science teacher, this book has been prepared with special emphasis on the latest two-year B.Ed course as approved by the UGC. All major concepts of science are given their due place in this book. This book is written in a lucid, simple and systematic manner.

The book is primarily intended to serve as a textbook for the teacher-trainees of B.Ed., who are specializing in the teaching of science; therefore, every attempt has been made to make the book useful for them. It is necessary that science teachers are thoroughly conversant with aims and objectives, curriculum, attitude, methodology and teaching-learning resources and materials that are so vital in the teaching of science. This book has been specially written to meet these needs; it has been so designed that it serves the purpose of the pupil-teachers as well as at the time when they are actually teaching in school during the course of their career in the exalted field of education. It covers the entire curriculum as specified for pedagogy of science as a school subject by different universities across the length and breadth of India.

While preparing the book, the authors have freely consulted, quoted from and used the works of different authors on the subject, periodicals and journals. The authors are highly grateful to all such scholarly publications, their authors and publishers.
