PREFACE
The various commissions and committees on Teacher Education have been recommending a Composite Course, Consisting of a rich theory base and practicums for producing more competent teachers for school education. After a long discussion and contemplation by many educationists, teacher educators and educational administrators, the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) developed guidelines for all the university Departments of Education to follow the B.Ed. curriculum developed by it or to develop their own curriculum, keeping in mind its guidelines. “Assessment of Learning” is a compulsory paper, the course content of which are being transacted during the second semester of B.Ed. in almost all the teacher-training institutes. The knowledge of this paper will help the student-teachers to be conversant with the conceptual knowledge of Evaluation and its various constituents. They will also familiarize themselves with the techniques of measuring and assessing the student’s scholastic and co-scholastic achievements.
The knowledge of the various issues of Evaluation is not of much use without the basic knowledge of certain statistical techniques. So the authors have included the required statistical methods and simple techniques for interpreting the scores.
The authors, on the basis of their long experience of teaching and training in schools and teacher-education institutes, as well as interacting with in-service teachers, could write this book in simple and intelligible language. They have tried to cover the course contents of “Assessment of Learning”,
(x) being transacted in the 2 year B.Ed. programmes the bone watcher training institutes. They, earnestly, hope that the book will serve the purpose for which it has been written.
The authors are indebted to all those student-teachers, in-service teachers and teacher educators who gave good suggestions and tried out the manuscript while teaching in their respective institutes. They are grateful to “Paragon International Publishers who devoted a good deal of time in in-depth meaningful discussions and published this book.
The saying that “there is always scope for improvement”, applies to this book also. The users of this book are requested to feel free to give their valuable suggestions for improving it further.
